This project involved brick and limestone cleaning in Chicago at 1047 West Webster, a historic brick home that is over 100 years old.

The building features beautiful masonry details including limestone cornices and window sills that had accumulated years of biological pollution and environmental buildup.

Older Chicago homes often develop contamination from mold, mildew, and environmental exposure, especially on shaded areas of brick and limestone surfaces.

The goal of this project was to carefully clean the masonry while protecting the historic materials that give the building its character.

Types of Contamination on Historic Chicago Masonry

The primary contamination on this home was biological pollution, including mold and mildew buildup that had developed over time.

Biological staining is very common on Chicago masonry due to moisture exposure and shaded building surfaces.

The building also had some atmospheric pollution present, though there was no heavy carbon crusting on the limestone surfaces.

Cleaning Process

Because the building contained both brick and limestone, careful cleaning methods were required to protect the stone and mortar joints.

After the primary cleaning process, a masonry brightener was applied to help restore the natural appearance of the brick and limestone surfaces.

This combination allowed us to remove the staining while preserving the integrity of the historic building materials.

Sidewalk and Stairway Cleaning

In addition to the building facade, the project also included cleaning several surrounding surfaces.

The sidewalks and stairway leading down to the lower apartment had significant buildup and staining that had accumulated over time.

Once cleaned, these areas looked dramatically different and restored the appearance of the entire property.
